PMI Chart

This week for reading we had to complete a PMI chart. For the chart we had to use 3 sources of imformation and then complete the table with the positives the negatives and the interesting. Here it is.

PMI Chart

Topic:  Are icebergs harmful or helpful?

Source of Information

Plus

Minus

Interesting

the world's largest iceberg

- the vast quantities of dust riding aboard A68a could fertilize nearby ocean plankton.

- sending planktons up the food chain to fish, penguins and seals.

- could crush animals.

- block off foraging routes for thousands of penguins and seals.

- potentially disrupting the island's ecosystem for a decade or more

- the island ecosystem could be seriously disrupted if the berg makes landfall.

- It may be on a collision course with a wildlife haven in the South Atlantic Ocean.

- It’s large enough to hold the five boroughs of New York City five times over.

Icebergs are doing something cool.

  • Natural fertilizer for the ocean.

  • When they melt they release minerals like iron into the ocean.

  • Growth of microscopic marine plants known as phytoplankton.

  • The new plant growth captures carbon, helping to reduce climate change.

No negative things in this text.

  • Scientists can see from satellites where an iceberg has passed.

  • They will see the recent growth of marine life.

  • The Iceberg  acts like a natural fertilizer.

Ice pirate

  • It will source 20 percent of the population of cape town for a year.

  • Will give water to people in need.

  • Will keep the taps from running dry.

  • Will be paid for.

- Severe drought in 2017 led to South African city Cape Town nearly running out of water.

- The mission is expected to cost around $285 million.

- In the mid 1800s, Chilean breweries would tow small icebergs.

The Life Cycle of an Iceberg.

This week we had to make a life cycle of an Iceberg diagram. Here is mine.

What's In The News This Week?

Current Events quiz --- Microsoft.

In the news recently, microsoft is to replace  around 50 of their contract journalist and use automated systems to select news stories instead. A team of full time journalist will remain, but some sacked journalist warned that artificial intelligence may not be fully familiar with strict editorial guidelines, and could  end up letting through inappropriate stories. I think that it is not a good idea because people are losing their jobs and they're being replaced by robots.

Topic Investigation.

Seeing as it's the first week out of lockdown we are doing something a little different. Mrs P set up an activity for us. First we had to make some puzzles to form 3 pictures. We then had to solve some word scrambles and a word search. Once we were done that we had to solve a series of maths questions to reveal some letters. Once we had got all the letter we unscrambled it again to form the words Ancient Egypt. Finally we labled some places in Egypt and comfermed the flag. Finally we had found what our topic is for the week: ANCIENT EGYPT.

Writing

This week we had to describe an object without using it's name. Here is mine, can you guess what it is?

The neck's sleek wood finish is as smooth as a freshly polished stone.
The silvery strings vibrate on a perfect octave.
The head's complex design glimmers in the morning sunlight, causing a faint apricot glow.

The enpin sighs as it strains to hold up it’s heavy burden, although it’s too proud to make a fuss.

Autmn Writing

This week for writing we had to write a small paragraph or a poem aroud Autumn without using the word Autmn.
The delicate branches of the kowhai tree, get bullied by the rain.
A fat kereru lands on the tree pecking at the flowers, harvesting
For the oncoming winter.
Ivy bursts into flames causing it to stick out like a sore thumb.
Dry leaves crunch under foot and clog up the gutters like a cork in
A champagne bottle.
The rose buds curl into their hard coats, shy of the weather.

The season is coming to a close as the winter draws nearer.

My special Place.

This week we had to write a piece on our special place. I chose the Collingwood beach in golden bay.

My Special Place.
Walking along, the smell of the salty seaside and hot chips fill my nostrils.
Salty, dried seaweed swirls through the air along with the subtle scent of
fresh fish. I smell the presence of the water gently combing the sand for
seashells.
As I dig my toes into the soft sand it provides a bed for my feet. The breeze
filters through my hair like a sieve. Sharp sticks poke me occasionally leaving
my feet speckled with splinters.
In the distance I see fishermen waiting for their prey. I see the birds flying
overhead with the wind as a pillow under their wings. Some kids nearby are
making huts out of the driftwood. The waves lap onto the shore, inhaling and
exhaling as they climb up the beach. seagulls and shags exchange calls
screeching as they go.
I hear the distant shouts of the fishermen when they haul in a fresh snapper.
My brother yells as a fish nearby jumps, we laugh, as it’s only a stone.
Collingwood beach is my special place,I feel calm and relaxed as I run through
the sand.

Hide and Seek Poem

Today we had to write a Hide and Seek poem. We had to describe a time when we were playing hide and seek. I chose to do a time when i was playing spotlight at a party.

Hide and Seek

Go! I sprint away, my hair flying in the wind. I scan the area as I run, searching
for a spot.
Faster! Faster!
As I reach the spot a crowd gathers, they too have the same idea. We form a
line and over the fence we go everyone helping each other over the towering
fence. We land in a heap on the dirty ground.
But not too loud, they’re after us.
Through the grimey boards I see a torch flash, blinding me from my watch.
Stay low and quiet.
Inhaling and exhaling like a whale, am I too loud?
I hear the distant giggling and shushing coming from behind me.
I try to shush them but the excitement builds.
My blood pumps and my heart pounds.
I mustn't move a muscle.
I feel the board vibrate as the seeker walks overhead.
I stay low even though I'm already lying on the damp mud, sluggish.
My friends hush and we all try not to breathe.
Does he know we’re there? I hope not because I want to win!
The suspense lingered as he scanned the area with the torch.
Damn!
The light blasts in my face.

Poem

This week we had to create a poem about something that we have done when we were little. Here is mine.
