Visiting Author

On Wednesday we had a visit from Thelma Eakin
the author of our class novel (The mine's afire). She had some treasures that she brought in and showed us. The treasures consisted of a safety lamp that the miners should have used but only introduced it later on after the explosion and a brass replica of the statue at the Brunner mine site. The book took about nine months to write and it was published in 2010. Before she wrote this book she was an English teacher and a Drama instructer at the Greymouth High School.
We learnt a lot and I really recomend that you read the book.

Brunner mine site.

For the past term we have been reading the book called 'A Mines Afire.' It is about the terrible explosion that happened On the 26th of March 1896. So on Monday we had a visit to the Brunner Mine site. We went there in the morning and split into groups. In those groups of about 8 we had to dress up and set a photo shoot. When we had found a place to take the photo we set the scene. Our scene was of 3 dead men lying under blankets with 2 woman grieving around them and a few men hanging around. I was one of the greiving woman.
The other activities involed having a tour around the old coke ovens and the original mine entrances. We also had to find out some more imformation about, such as how coal was made and what tools the Miners used to get out the coal.
After that we went to the Stillwater Cemetery said some poems and read some of the Miners names out. In the Cemetery there is a mass grave where 33 men and boys were buiried. The youngest boy was 15 and the oldest man was 72. The other miners that wern't buried in the mass grave were either buried in family plots or in Greymouth cemetery.
We had a really fun time, it was really interesting and we learnt alot.
Here are some photos of our trip.

On Wednesday I had West Coast swimming sports. I qualified for West Coast in the 25 metre Breaststroke. The path to West Coast swimming sports is you have to do school swimming sports and then Grey districts and then West Coast. If you win you go to Canterbury.

Song.

This week for music we had to find a song that we liked. I found this song. I like it because it doesn't end and it has a good tune.
